Geography

Geography provokes and answers questions about the natural and human world using different scales of enquiry to view them from different perspectives. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps and a range of investigative and problem solving skills both inside and outside the classroom.As pupils study geography, we encounter different societies and cultures. This helps us to ‘think globally’, realise how nations rely on each other and can inspire us to think about our own place in the world and our responsibilities to the environment.

Intent

At Christleton Primary it is our intent to ignite children’s curiosity about their local environment as well as the rest of the world; its people and its places, resources and environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes.

Our curriculum will inspire children to become confident, creative and independent learners who can develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas.

The teaching of Geography at our school is intended to equip children to ask pertinent questions, analyse evidence, think critically, appreciate different perspectives and develop informed judgments.

We aim to engage children in practical experiences both inside and outside of school through carefully planned fieldwork, educational visits, visitors, experiments and exploration to enhance their learning. We also want children to develop geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways.

We deliberately foster strong links with our PHSE/Seal/No Outsiders curriculum and British values.

Implementation

Our creative curriculum map has been devised in order to provide a framework for the Geography taught within our school. We implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Geography is talk as part of a termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. We ensure that geography has the same importance given to it as the core subjects, as we feel this is important in enabling all children to gain ‘real-life’ experiences. For example, using the local area to follow maps in Key Stage 1, to comparing the similarities and differences in environments and communities in Lower Key Stage 2, through to debating world issues in Upper Key Stage 2.

Impact

The impact and measure of this is to ensure that children at Christleon are equipped with geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world. We want children to have enjoyed learning about geography, therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future.

Geography Curriculum

This document outlines how we have planned to deliver the National Curriculum in Geography across Years 1- 6.

Geography and EYFS

Whilst we prefer not to refer to geography as a discrete subject on the Early Years and Foundation Stage curriculum, it can be found within various areas of learning.
Of the seven areas of learning and development outlined in the EYFS framework the area that fits best with geography is ‘Understanding the World’. Within this area, children are guided to make sense of their physical world and community through a range of personal experiences. This development of knowledge and understanding does not happen in isolation without simultaneously and symbiotically developing the other six areas of learning. Our EYFS curriculum document provides the overview of how we deliver the EYFS framework in school and prepare our children for the National Curriculum covered from Year 1 upwards.
